UCF HyperSpace – Advancing Hypersonics and Space Propulsion Research
About the UCF HyperSpace Center
The UCF HyperSpace Center — officially known as the Center of Excellence in Hypersonic and Space Propulsion — is the University of Central Florida’s cutting-edge research initiative in high-speed aerospace technologies. Formed in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the center supports national priorities by advancing next-generation hypersonic propulsion and spaceflight capabilities.
Launched in October 2024, the The HyperSpace Center focuses on pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in hypersonic research. Hypersonic propulsion allows aircraft and spacecraft to travel at speeds of Mach 6 to Mach 17 — over 13,000 miles per hour — enabling applications that range from rapid Earth travel to deep space exploration. Located near UCF’s main campus in Central Florida Research Park, the center provides a high-performance environment for testing propulsion systems, materials, and aerodynamic structures under extreme conditions.
UCF faculty, such as Professor Kareem Ahmed, lead research efforts at the HyperSpace Center with support from over $20 million in Department of Defense funding. The research includes developing stabilized detonation engines, morphing hypersonic engines, and the world’s first hypersonic rotating detonation rocket. This work plays a crucial role in enhancing U.S. national defense while simultaneously preparing a new generation of scientists and engineers to enter the aerospace workforce.
“What we create here and across UCF will define the aerospace and defense industries for generations,” said UCF President Alexander N. Cartwright at the center’s launch. With a commitment to diversity and excellence, the UCF HyperSpace Center supports students from all backgrounds through hands-on research opportunities and mentorship. The center currently includes more than 65 student researchers and is recognized as a key driver in making UCF the nation’s top supplier of talent to the aerospace and defense industry.
The collaboration between UCF and the U.S. Air Force builds on a long-standing relationship, with additional projects spanning radiation-hardened semiconductors and defense-grade electronic design. Through strong partnerships and shared vision, the UCF HyperSpace Center continues to fuel innovations that will transform both the military and civilian aerospace sectors.
