The U.S. Power Sector NOx Emissions Reduction
The 1990 U.S. Clean Air Act brought standards to the power sector to reduce the level of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emitted into the atmosphere. This NOx Tracker will monitor the NOx reduction the power generation industry has achieved since 1995. Nitrogen oxides are pollutants produced when fuel is burned at high temperatures — when nitrogen and oxygen gases react during combustion. Power plants, automobiles, boats and construction vehicles produce nitrogen oxides.
University of Central Florida engineers who specialize in power generation—collected the data from an Environmental Protection Agency database to create the tracker and website. The chart shows the annual amount of NOx emission per MWh. A continuous downward trend can be observed over the past few decades.
The UCF NOx Tracker was created with the support of Mitsubishi Power and will be regularly updated.

About University of Central Florida
The power generation industry is undergoing transformational changes, with similar changes occurring in aviation and space systems. UCF’s Center for Advanced Turbomachinery and Energy Research (CATER) conducts research to help revolutionize these industries for a more reliable, secure and cleaner energy future. The center also educates and trains the workforce, which will be managing and improving tomorrow’s energy production.
The challenge ahead: to create technology that produces reliable and clean energy.
Experts at CATER are looking at technology to address NOx as well as some other pollutants outlined in the U.S. Clean Air Act and monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency. It’s these engineers, with the support of Mitsubishi Power, who created the NOx tracker to ensure that as innovations come online, they are addressing all pollutants and not simply trading one for another.
The future of energy is now, and it needs to be safe, reliable and secure for generations to come.
UCF is one of the largest metropolitan research universities in the nation offering more than 230 degrees across 13 colleges. U.S. News & World Report has named UCF one of the most innovative universities in the nation. The College of Engineering and Computer Science and many of its programs also are ranked and work with a variety of local and national industry partners.
